processing line comprising several pieces of large equipment including a sorter a blancher and a freezer tunnel which were furnished by various manufacturers Prior to this project Sure Fresh did not have a SCADA system to monitor production line efficiencies power usage water usage etc Because the market has become more competitive however the company identified the need to capture this data as a means to help improve efficiency and productivity Because the existing facility did not implement a centralized SCADA system Cannon recommended that the client start with a basic SCADA infrastructure which would allow for expansion at a pace that didn t exceed budgetary and staffing tolerances We recommended that Sure Fresh standardize its SCADA equipment on Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers PLCs for three main reasons 1 Allen Bradley provides a strong and healthy local support community 2 it is a quality product with longevity and 3 the cost of labor associated with integrating multiple pieces of purpose built equipment into a single SCADA system is much lower when the hardware and software systems are standardized around Allen Bradley and Rockwell specifications Cannon provided design installation and start up service of Sure Fresh s SCADA System including servers network infrastructure FactoryTalk SE Server FactoryTalk OPC Server and FactoryTalk Historian Important Engineering Features Cannon designed a basic SCADA infrastructure Cannon standardized Sure Fresh Produce s SCADA equipment on Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers PLCs Project Accomplishments Allen Bradley provides a strong and healthy local support community Labor cost associated with integrating multiple pieces of equipment into a single SCADA system is lower The project allowed for the capturing of SCADA data which enables increased production and lower overhead Back to Service Information Location Santa Maria California Market Food and Beverage Contact Cannon Home About Careers Loose Cannons Cannon

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA system controls the brewing processes which include fermentation tank temperatures wort tank temperatures and variable frequency drives VFDs to control various mixers and pumps With over seven ales stouts IPAs Porters and seasonal brews on tap management of each brewing process requires the utmost organization sequencing and above all accuracy Historically the SCADA system was installed and maintained by brewery staff Recently the system experienced random errors and anomalies with temperature readings They sought the advice of Cannon s Automation and Electrical Engineering Division What was thought to be a straight forward problem inaccurate readings from the temperature probes was actually the symptom of a four fold problem Grounding was inconsistent among the conduits motors tanks and panels Control wiring was installed in the same panel with high voltage wiring EMF from the VFD and the converter legs created noise currents in the control loops which threw off the instruments The single phase 120 volt to three phase 380 volt converter failed while Cannon was trouble shooting the system this added to the randomness of problems seen in the system One of the RTD cards in the PLC failed likely due to the above mentioned power issues By methodically isolating each problem and fully understanding the sequence which the system was to operate Cannon s staff resolved the issues With the brew schedule dictating when the SCADA system could be serviced Cannon s engineering and automation technicians often worked in the evenings and on weekends Solutions for this project included upgrading the grounding for the system rewiring and reprogramming portions of the Programmable Logic Controllers Ladder Logic and instrumentation loops and separating the control wiring from the high voltage wiring Important Features Upgrading the grounding for the system Rewiring and reprogramming portions of the
