    commanded the Boston Navy Yard and while serving in this capacity he was commissioned as a Rear Admiral His last active duty was the command of the South Pacific squadron from October 1872 to September 1873 when he was placed on the retired list His total sea service amounted to twenty four years and one month THe funeral services will be held at St John s Church Washington Monday at noon The remains will be taken to Boston for internment in Mount Auburn Cemetery Obituary 15 Nov 1890 Boston Suffolk Co MA Boston Daily Advertiser Rear Admiral Steedman Rear Admiral Charles Steedman U S N retired who died at Washington Thursday evening was born in Charleston S C 79 years ago last September He entered the navy as midshipman in 1828 became a paged midshipman in 1834 was promoted to lieutenant in 1841 and saw his first war service during the Mexican War in the sloop St mary s in 1846 and 1847 He commanded the slege guns on shore at the bombardment of Vera Cruz and was active in other operations along the coast He was commissioned commander in 1855 and in the Paraguay expedition commanded the brig Dolphin When his native State seceded his friends used their utmost efforts to induce him to enlist in their cause but he remained loyal asked for immediate duty took command of the railroad ferry steamer Maryland and conveyed Gen Butler and the Eighth Massachusetts regiment from Havre de Grace to Annapolis in April 1861 He assisted Admiral Foote in organizing the naval forces on the Mississippi River commanded the steamer Bienville which led the second column at the capture of Port Royal S C in November 1861 took command of the steamer Paul Jones which did duty on the coast and rivers of Florida in 1862 was promoted to captain in that year took par as commander of the Powhatan in the blockade of Charleston and several engagements there towed the captured ship Atlanta to Philadelphia took command of the Ticonderoga in which he went to the Brazilian coast in pursuit of the Confederate cruiser Florida participated in the two attacks on Fort Fisher remained on the Ticonderoga during her Mediterranean cruise and returned in command of the steam frigate Colorado He was promoted to commodore in 1866 made rear admiral in 1871 and retired in 1873 For three years he was in command of the Boston Navy Yard and is remembered her for his courtesy as well as everywhere for his bravery and efficiency Buried 18 Nov 1890 Mount Auburn Cemetery Cambridge Middlesex Co MA Obituary 19 Nov 1890 New York New York Co NY New York Times REAR ADMIRAL STEEDMAN BURIED BOSTON Nov 18 The burial of Rear Admiral Charles Steedman of the United States Navy took place to day at Mount Auburn Cambridge The remains arrived in Boston last night accompanied by the immediate relatives An opportunity was afforded the friends and associates of the deceased to view
