the second round of the process I talked this over with the committee and we ve yanked technical from the guidelines I ve added a tool to the program committee app that will help us review any votes that have already been cast reevaluating our votes with the new criteria in mind I m sorry I upset both past and potential speakers and I m sorry I gave anyone the

can move from the screening stage either by meeting the six minimum screening guidelines according to a certain percentage of reviewers or because enough reviewers nominated the talk to move into the next round anyway despite not quite meeting all six criteria The UI looks something like this Minimum Screening Guidelines 1 This proposal follows PyCon s Code of Conduct All talks must follow the Code of Conduct There can not and will not be any exceptions If you are unsure about a talk reach out to me or my co chair Karen and ask for feedback 2 This proposal is complete clearly written and articulate All sections of the proposal are filled out the proposal indicates that it was put together with some care and thought Reviewers can basically understand what the talk is about even if they re not experts in the talk topic 3 This proposal has a thorough and achievable outline The outline is one of the best tools the committee has to understand what your talk has to offer Please take the time to outline your talk in a fair amount of detail Put timing on sections so we can understand the talk s emphasis We consider the outline in the SpacePug sample proposal the minimum standard for a successful PyCon proposal s outline 4 This proposal has a coherent subject Talks should be about one thing and should cover that one thing well There should be a central idea or concept the audience should learn 5 This proposal is about the Python ecosystem This conference is after all PyCon Talks do not need to be 100 about Python to pass this criterion Proposals should be clear how their material is relevant to Python and Pythonistas 6 This proposal has a sufficient audience among attendees

dozen ideas none of which were quite good enough to merit their own talk Another bad proposal is the case study where a high level discussion is had about lots of ways you tried to do things without success The easiest way to judge coherence is to consider your talk as a story with a narrative Is there a beginning middle and end with a theme that ties it all together That s coherent How can you rescue a case study or a smorgasbord Find a single nugget of truth that s interesting enough that you could talk about it for half an hour and have your peers riveted to their seats What s the one little piece that gets you truly excited Talk about that Technical Presentation Mostly about Python PyCon is a conference for those who program in Python or aspire to program in Python We tend to say talks should be about things that are of interest to Python programmers but this is our way of special casing talks about the Python community What we really mean is talks should pretty much be about Python or the Python community Please don t pitch a PyCon talk about a new Agile Methodology or a talk about your new NoSQL database written in something other than Python Puts Butts in Seats At the end of the day a successful talk schedule is one where the typical PyCon attendee is overwhelmed with multiple choices per talk slot For the program committee this is victory Things that don t put butts in seats include arguments or advertising A PyCon talk is not the place to argue over some PEP advertise your new library or otherwise try to sell something What do you do if you want to start a conversation about

her career she mentioned what she thought made her good at teaching The people in the Boston Symphony are all amazing musicians but they re all naturals None of them has had to struggle with their embouchure or needed to motivate themselves to practice four hours a day So they don t know how to help those who are struggling There s an underlying wisdom here that s not about playing an instrument or being an elite orchestral musician It isn t about the Dunning Kruger effect either It s about knowing how you do what you do Getting better at a skill involves practice and self evaluation When your talent is strong enough you tend to forget the self evaluation There are things we get good enough at or things we re talented enough at to not really need to understand the underlying details of how we do what we do A good example is typing When is the last time you ve really thought about your typing habits Every once in a while I try to take a step back and evaluate how I m typing and see how I can tweak my typing What s something that

Everyone is going back to their car and nobody is heading into the park The overall throughput of the system was increased by running fewer monorail trains Let s simulate what s going on with a little bit of JavaScript I ll cobble together a bit of D3 it s been a while to visualize it There is a whole body of work around ensuring two trains don t collide For light rail systems such as the Walt Disney World monorail the most common system is a block system The track is divided into a collection of segments called blocks Various means are then used to notify the operator if the block in front is available for progress If a block is occupied the train isn t allowed to enter it Most systems maintain some sort of spacing leaving a couple of empty blocks between trains We will simplify the Walt Disney World monorail system to be a circle divided into equal sized blocks We ll put a terminal with guests entering at the top and a terminal with guests leaving at the bottom We can then see how varying the number of blocks and number of trains can affect overall system throughput We ll measure passenger loads transported and see how varying the number of blocks and trains can affect throughput These diagrams are highly stylized representations of the congestion on the train loop A red block has a train in it orange and yellow blocks are there to ensure proper spacing between trains Finally loads of guests are being added at the top and removed at the bottom Each tick the trains move one block if the path in front of them is clear If the path isn t clear they wait Finally it takes three ticks at

so help support my helicopter buying habit Infrared LEDs I bought mine at Radio Shack but these look like a fine replacement Breadboard To plug things into This one comes with handy wires Resistors A whole box with lots of mixed resistors Arduino UNO R3 Embedded development for less than 30 Syma S107G The cheap fun helicopter you came here for I ve also made some code available on github to ease the process of playing with Syma S107G s from Python I ve purposely kept this code pretty low feature the whole point is to experiment with it and play around with it a bit yourself I need to give massive props to Aqualung on this message board My Arduino code is shamelessly cribbed from his code As to setting up the hardware you want to attach pin 8 on your Arduino to the anode the round side with the longer lead of your LED You then want to send the cathode the flat side with the shorter lead through a resistor then the resistor to the 5V output on the Arduino What resistor should you use Look at the datasheet for your LED and find the forward voltage
